Desk Genie universal dock review

Thursday 27 May 2010 @ 9:38 pm

Buying accessories for HTC phones has always been a little bit tricky. HTC typically rolls out a few specific accessories per phone, but you’re forced to look at third parties if you want something other than a standard handset case. For me, desktop docks are one of the most important accessory for a phone. I’m in and out of the office throughout the day, but when I have time to sit down at my desk, I need something that can hold my handset, keeping it visible on the desk. Recently I came across the Desk Genie and asked Mobile Fun is I could take it for a spin. The Desk Genie has a non-slip slanted surface which holds the phone in place. The base of the dock sports two USB slots, four memory card slots, and a faint Led lit panel on the front.

The nicest thing about the Desk Genie dock is that its unique design with the non-slip surface allows you to use it with almost any handset. My trusty G1 was the first phone I used with it. Simply place the phone on the front and connect the power cable and you’re set. Surprisingly, the dock also held my G1 in place horizontally with the QWERTY keyboard open. Over the past two weeks I have been able to pair the Desk Genie up with a slew of HTC phones. For the most part, things worked perfectly, but the non-slip surface of the dock fared better with some phones that with others. All handsets with HTC’s soft-touch backs has incredible grip, but phones like the Nexus One seemed to have a harder time staying in place. The issue is most likely due to the metal strip across the back and the protruding camera lens of the Nexus.

Since the dock works with handsets with varying shapes and sizes it allows users to update their handsets over time without the need to look for a new dock. Though the non-slip surface on the dock keeps your phone in place, it does tend to pick up all the dust and lint on the back of your phone. Keeping you phone clean helps keep in non-slip surface in pristine condition, but if it does collect too much dust, simply wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Overall, the Desk Genie offers a reliable and unique twist on the generic, universal handsets docks on the market. At £14.99 (just under $22), the Desk Genie is considerably cheaper than many of the other docking options out there. If you have any questions, let me know. I’ve been using the Desk genie as my main dock for a while and should have it front and center on my desk for quite some time.
