New T-Mobile myTouch unveiled

Monday 4 October 2010 @ 2:09 pm

And just like that, T-Mobile went and stole our thunder by officially announcing the new T-Mobile myTouch. For a second, we were convinced that T-Mobile would be naming the rumored myTouch HD as the myTouch 2, but they have chosen to keep in simple. The new T-Mobile myTouch will be the second handset to fully support T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network and will also be the first device from T-Mobile to sport a front-facing camera for video calling. The phone will also feature a 3.8 inch capacitive WVGA display, Qualcomm’s second generation MSM 8255 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5MP camera with the ability to record video in 720p, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.

Similar to HTC’s Desire Z and HD, the T-Mobile myTouch will be able to share pictures, music and video over DLNA with the included Screen share application. T-Mobile’s press release makes no mention of HTC Sense, but we’re pretty confident that it will feature the same Espresso build of the UI that’s found on the myTouch Slide. T-Mobile’s still be shy about how much they plan on charging for the new myTouch, but they did mention that we should expect the handset in time for the holidays.

With the myTouch’s front-facing camera paired with Video Chat, customers can hold video conversations with friends and family who have a new T-Mobile myTouch, other compatible mobile device or capable PC. Customers can even see who is available to chat through presence information integrated into the myTouch’s address book.

Exclusive: T-Mobile myTouch HD exposed as the new myTouch 2

Sunday 3 October 2010 @ 9:18 pm

It’s not every day that we break an exclusive here at HTC Source, but today is our (and your) lucky day. Just a few hours ago, the myTouch HD was uncovered on T-Mobile’s website, but with a little more digging, we discovered a few more larger images of the handset and the phone’s real name. While we like the sound of the myTouch HD, it looks like the new handset will actually be named the T-Mobile myTouch 2. This bit of information actually comes from T-Mobile’s file naming structure for the images we found. Our digging did not reveal any new specs on the myTouch 2, though the side angle image does reveal that the phone features connection pins similar to those found on Google’s Nexus One. There’s no guarantee, but it looks like T-Mobile is planning to launch a car or desk dock for the myTouch 2.

We still don’t know when the myTouch 2 will be hitting the streets, but from what Engadget uncovered it looks like customers may be able to pick the phone up for free.

NOTE: Though T-Mobile’s website clearly states “Priced as low as FREE” our friends over at TmoNews have informed us that T-Mobile often labels handsets as being “FREE” when they have not yet been priced.

myTouch HD documents confirm front facing camera and 1GHz “dual processor”

Monday 13 September 2010 @ 10:25 am

T-Mobile customers not completely sold on the upcoming T-Mobile G2 might want to take a close look at some new details on the myTouch HD.  We’ve known for a while that the myTouch HD would be one of the most exciting Android phones this fall, but detailed specs have been missing until now.  Those hoping that this phone would feature a massive 4.3 inch screen will be a little disappointed, but the mTHD will have a 3.8 inch Super TFT LCD screen.  The phone will also feature Android 2.2, 4GB of internal memory, 5MP camera with LED flash, front facing VGA camera for video calling/chat, a 1GHz “dual processor” (whatever that is), and support for HSPA+ so you can jump on “America’s largest 4G network.”

The T-Mobile myTouch HD will certainly be one of the best Android phones on T-Mobile when it launches, though we still have a few reservations about it.  Since the phone is sporting the myTouch name, we’re expecting it will be loaded up with the Espresso UI variant of HTC Sense.  We’re also not sure what “dual processor” is trying to imply.  It would be nice if this phone did feature a dual-core 1GHz processor, but this clearly contradicts Qualcomm’s statement from last week.

See what HTC has dreamt up, press event scheduled for September 15

Friday 13 August 2010 @ 9:05 am

If you’re dying to know what HTC has been working on for the past few months, we suggest you mark September 15th on your calendar.  HTC has just send out invitations to the media to a press event they will be hosting on September 15th in London.  As usual, no details about the event have been revealed, but we’re pretty sure that HTC will be showing off at least a few different Android and Windows Phone 7 devices.  The date does fall pretty close to the expected launch of the HTC Vanguard on T-Mobile USA, but HTC typically does not announce U.S. specific devices at their international press events.  That being said, the HTC Vanguard could be launch in both the U.S. and EU just like the HTC Dream.

Other phones we could expect to see unveiled at HTC’s London event include the HTC Ace (Desire HD), HTC Mozart, HTC Vision, HTC Schubert, and the HTC Glacier.  If that list looks a bit long, keep in mind that HTC is expected to unveil 6 new phones and ship over 8 million units in Q4 alone.

Unraveling the mysteries of T-Mobile’s Project Emerald

Friday 13 August 2010 @ 8:23 am

Looking for some new details on the mythical Project Emerald?  The guys over at Phandroid are now reporting that Project Emerald is actually a reference to the launch of two different HTC handsets, not one.  The source behind this new rumor claims that will have a “dual-launch of the HTC Vision as the G1 Blaze, and the HTC Desire HD as the myTouch 3G HD” with the first handset hitting stores on September 22nd and the other will make an appearance one week later on September 29th

While we like the idea of a dual-launch plan, there are a few things here that simply don’t add up:

We may be wrong, but we’re going to be labeling Phandroid’s rumor as pure speculation.  We know that HTC and T-Mobile have something big planned with Project Emerald; we just don’t think a two phone launch is what they have in the works.

New picture of the myTouch HD shows off the phone’s back side

Friday 30 July 2010 @ 11:22 am

Very little is known about the upcoming HTC Vanguard. Some were expecting it the be the G1 Blaze, but now it looks like T-Mobile’s first official phone to support HSDPA+ may be the myTouch (3G) HD. As of now, all we know about the phone is the name and what’s been revealed through the two images of the handset which have leaked this week.

The first image shows off the front of the phone which features a larger, more narrow display than the myTouch 3G Slide. Above the screen, it appears the the myTouch HD will feature a front facing camera which could be used for video calling over HSDPA+. The design elements of the phone are pretty close to those of the myTouch Slide, though the back of the handset looks to have a soft-touch, matte finish along the edge and a silver colored plate in the middle.

We expect the myTouch HD to feature at least a 1GHz processor, 5-8MP camera, Android 2.1 (maybe 2.2 since HTC seems to be rolling out the new update to many of their phones starting this weekend), and the Espresso build of HTC Sense.

Quite a few Android fans have been complaining about the lack of a powerhouse phone on T-Mobile’s network. With the myTouch HD, T-Mobile looks to be stepping up their game to compete with the HTV EVO 4G and the DROID X. Question is, does anyone here really want another myTouch phone?
