Rumored HTC tablet to use Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform

Monday 20 September 2010 @ 9:32 am

The rumors of an HTC tablet simply won’t die.  DigiTimes is reporting that HTC is now working with Pegatron Technologies to develop and manufacture a tablet device which will compete directly with Apple’s iPad.  We have seen rumors in the past about a Google Chrome powered tablet from HTC, but there appears to be a little confusion around this latest report.  Google Chrome and Android are both mentioned and there are other references to Chrome Apps and the Android Market.

On the smartphone side, HTC as a very strong relationship with Qualcomm, but the rumored HTC tablet is expected to feature Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform.  Other spec details include a multi-touch 1280×720 resolution display, 32GB SSD, 2GB RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.  Price for the HTC tablet should be around NT$25,000 (US$789.75), but could be much lower since HTC typically partners will cellular carriers to subsidize the price of their devices.

As HTC fans, we love the idea of an HTC tablet.  We’re not sure about you, but we would much rather have an Android powered device than a tablet running Google Chrome.  But we wouldn’t be disappointed if HTC and Google worked together to give us a dual-booting option with the best of both worlds.

HTC is definitely known for their Windows Mobile and Android phones, but what many people forget is that HTC likes to dabble in different form factors from time to time.  Rumors about an HTC tablet are nothing new, but today is the first time we are hearing about a possible Chrome OS powered table from HTC.  According to Download Squad, Google has commissioned HTC to build a tablet device that will run their new Chrome OS.  The hardware will include a 1280 x 720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM, a hefty 32GB of internal storage, GPS, front facing webcam, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.

The HTC tablet is rumored to makes its debut on Black Friday (November 26) and will be available on Verizon’s 3G network.  The Chrome OS tablet is expected to be extremely cheap or even free for those who purchase a data plan though Verizon.  We’ve been hoping for a tablet device from HTC for a while, but we’re not really sure how we feel about Chrome OS.
